Why College
I loved being in High School, nothing was better then being able to hang out with your friends each and every single day and having close ties to girls I had been around for four solid years. Going to football games, experiencing prom, lunch time, all of it are memories that I could never forget. Senior year everyone talked about how exciting college was going to be, the new people you meet, the late nights, etc. I was really excited to be apart of that. Although my grades were straight A’s and I was involved in all kinds of community activities; the school I wanted to go to denied me because I would not retake my SAT’s. The reason why I did not, I was spending my Christmas in Louisiana helping out with the Hurricane aftermath. Still rubs me in the wrong way! ;)
So instead I went to a local state college and then this year I went to a community college so that way I could enter in to the EMT/Paramedic program. At the state college I was studying to be a nurse; I was taking a full load and more as a freshman, living on campus, along with trying to make a difference. All of that year turned in the totally opposite direction by spring term. I moved back home, changed my major and knew by that spring term that I would no longer be at that college!
See in Oregon getting into the Nursing program is a very rough road. After competing with hundreds of other individuals the school only allows about 2% of those people who applied to get in…I was not one of them and at first that was a horrible moment but it turned out to be what was best for me! So I didn’t want to waste another year in money and time trying to get into the nursing program again, so I looked into other health professions. What happened to pop up was the EMT program.
The more I looked into the program the more excited I got and the more I realized that this profession was going to fit me far more then nursing was going to. I applied to that program and was accepted that summer! I have been in this program since the start of this year and test for my basic license in April! Then next year I will hopefully be in the paramedic program and on my way in life! This year has been an amazing year and one of the best moments in my life because I am able to do so much more then just learning in a classroom, I am able to be hands on and see what exactly I am going to be doing.
College was not a huge leap for me due to the fact that I had been trying to survive with helping myself in a lot of situation since my Sophomore year in High School. I was ready for the challenge and already realized how much work and responsibility it was going to take. No one could ever be prepared for the lack of sleep, lack of social life, and all the hard work that goes into college…that is just something you have to get use to along the way!
I do wish I could be part of a bigger college and experience more of the typical college life but for some reason the Lord has some other kind of plan for me and so far I am enjoying learning about my profession but as any young adult my age I for sure miss the social aspect of that! It is nothing like High School but it is also an experience that I couldn’t imagine missing in life.

Community college kids unite! Oh we are blessed. We get the work, without the fun social part!
Cool story though. It’s amazing how God lead you to be an EMT, and all that he IS DOING through your circomstances, and where he has placed you now! I miss High School too, but you know, this is something totally new, and it’s exacally where God wants us at this moment. How cool is that?
“The reason why I did not, I was spending my Christmas in Louisiana helping out with the Hurricane aftermath. Still rubs me in the wrong way!”
You have a right to be offended. That is completely wrong. They don’t deserve you.
Katrina, what unbelievable devastation. If you haven’t already, that experience might be worth a post.
“The more I looked into the program the more excited I got and the more I realized that this profession was going to fit me far more then nursing was going to.”
It is amazing how often events work out for the best. I guess somebody is watching over you.
“I am able to be hands on and see what exactly I am going to be doing.”
I guess it would help to know what you are doing in an Emergency Room.
“It is nothing like High School but it is also an experience that I couldn’t imagine missing in life.”
That is great to hear. It sounds like you are becoming very well prepared for life.
Joy, us college students! We are crazy! We make up our own fun huh!!! How is everything with you?
Ed, I don’t think I have written on the Hurricane stuff. I might do that, pretty cool experience. I for sure have someone watching over me! I am blessed to have that!
